What is FSSC22000 and what does it mean in the food industry?
Based on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards, FSSC 22000 is a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), that is also supported by the European Food and Drink Association (CIAA) and the American Groceries Manufacturing Association (GMA). The focus is to assure food safety by defining, evaluating and controlling risks and hazards during our processing and product manufacturing.

Benefit from our implementation of FSSC22000:

What can I do to become more Food Safety oriented in my daily life?

When cooking, wash your hands between steps.
Washing your hands before cooking is almost a no brainer, but many forget to also wash between steps. This is especially true that you should wash your hands after handling raw meat.

Keep your work surfaces clean.
When preparing meals make sure that your counters, cutting boards and all work surfaces have been cleaned sufficiently first.

Use separate cutting boards for raw meats, vegetables and produce, and cooked foods.
Designate one board for raw meats, one for fruits and vegetables and one to cut cooked or prepared food on. This keeps cross contamination to a minimum.

Cook foods to safe temperatures.
Check out the recommended temperature for food safety and make sure that you are cooking foods to safe temperatures.

Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold.
Hot foods should be kept at 140 degrees or higher and cold foods at 40 degrees or lower. Utilizing a crockpot or other warming tray is a great way to keep food hot. Bowls with ice are also great method of keeping those cold items cold.

At Sakpro we are dedicated to ensure food safety along the entire food chain from production to consumption.

WE HAVE MOVED!

Our Randfontein branch moved to a new & BIGGER office!

We are excited to announce that our Randfontein team has moved to a new location in Stormill, Roodepoort JHB. Our old office served us well, and we made great memories there, but we couldn’t be more excited about our new space. The relocation is a result of the company’s growth over the last 2 years which is reflected in the rise in numbers of both clients and employees.

The new office is located next to Main Reef Road, putting us right on the street and looking out onto the R41. The above picture shows the office from a street view. We’re excited about the hustle and bustle happening outside our windows and all the great roadside exposure we get from the new location.

While we were happy with our space, there were several motivating factors to make a move:

Space. When we first moved into our last office, there were 12 admin staff and 11 warehouse staff. And plenty of room... When we left, there were 18 admin staff members and 24 warehouse staff members, and space was getting tight. The new office offered more square footage, but more importantly it allowed us to rethink our layout. We were able to start from scratch by knocking down walls and putting up warehousing layouts that better suit our team and provide for growth. Overall, we now have more of an open plan so we’re all working closer together rather than a more compartmentalized layout as at our previous premises.

Visibility. Our previous premises, we were on the outskirts of Randfontein. Our new location right next to Main Reef Road will bolster our visibility and help us to more quickly come to mind as a local business.

Location. Our new location is much closer to the Johannesburg CBD making it more accessible from the other areas surrounding Johannesburg. We are close to the Maraisburg offramp on the N1 highway.

Our new office space also allows for a better customer experience as well as a better sales office for the public.

Empowering people through Our PFP Partnership

Multiknit is passionate about its role in the local chapter of Partners for Possibility (PFP), which aims to provide quality education for all children in South Africa by 2025 through partnerships between business, government and the social sector.

PFP is all about empowering principals to become change leaders in their schools and communities to promote social cohesion. The core focus is to enhance the quality of education and the overall school environment and foster proactive engagements between parents, teachers and community-based business leaders.

Partners for Possibility’s (PFP) NEL 2 Circle walked down memory lane during a celebration event at Cyril Clarke Secondary School, earlier this year.

NEL 2 Circle is made up of eight business partners and eight school principals.

Many projects are still works in progress, but the outcome, in the minds of this dynamic group, has already been achieved. They celebrated the creation and implementation of many solutions for the challenges faced by the schools involved.

Multiknit was awarded with a Certifcate,of Appreciation at the event for all our participation and the positive changes we’ve brought to the school. According to Mel Tomlinson, the facilitator of this group, those involved experienced an amazing journey together.

The needs are many. These schools may be underfunded and rural, but there is no shortage of talent and an inspiring willingness to excel despite the challenges at hand. Should you wish to get involved, Mel Tomlinson can be contacted on mel@symphonia.net.

Giving Back....

In July of this year I was contacted by Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary who had a dilemma. One of their little rhino orphans, Swazi, was eating sand and not vegetation - as is the norm. This is extremely dangerous as the sand, rocks and other debris lies in the stomach of the baby rhino and doesn’t pass through their systems. This would prove fatal for the little one and lead to certain death.

Out of desperation, Care For Wild thought of a plan which they were hoping would work... To line the entire boma, where the little rhino is kept, with shade net in the hopes that this would stop baby Swazi from eating sand.

I immediately jumped into action and
with the assistance of Cobus, who in turn contacted William, we managed to organize a donation of shade netting to Care for Wild.

Care For Wild arranged to collect that very same afternoon, and were extremely grateful for our assistance once again.

I was kept updated throughout the process of the shade net being laid and received photos of the progress. The end result was absolutely amazing as you can see!!

Care for Wild had also acquired a “bokkie” (goat) whom would be Swazi’s full time companion in the hopes that the bokkie would teach Swazi how to start eating correctly and browse for her food.

Three months down the line and happy to report that all is going well with Swazi, she is now a browser and has been let out of her Boma to explore with her other baby rhino companions!

Knittex reaches out to care for wild rhino orphanage and sanctuary

The world in general has become grimly accustomed to the slaughter of Africa’s great game. When fresh footage of butchered rhinos or elephants hits the television screens it is all too easy to assume the atrocities are just another chapter in a long-running saga and that the threatened species will survive. A recent visit to Care for Wild has opened us up to a new perspective on underground wildlife trading.
